01 · KEY TAKEAWAYS
Seven things to know before you start
- AI answers are now a primary way people search. Google reports AI Overviews reach over 2.5 billion people a month and AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in 2026. Being named inside the answer is the new “position one.”
- AEO is built on SEO, not a replacement for it. Google says there are no extra technical requirements for its AI features beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet. The fundamentals still decide who gets cited.
- If AI crawlers can’t reach or read your pages, nothing else matters. Check robots.txt, your firewall or CDN, and make sure key content is in the HTML, not loaded only by JavaScript.
- Write in answers, not just keywords. Question-led headings followed by a direct 40 to 60 word answer are the easiest passages for AI systems to lift and cite.
- Consistency is a trust signal. Your name, address, phone, services and descriptions should match everywhere: your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, directories and social profiles.
- Other people’s words about you carry weight. In a 75,000-brand study, mentions of a brand across the web were the factor most correlated with appearing in Google’s AI Overviews, ahead of backlinks.
- You can measure it now. Google Search Console reports impressions from its AI features, Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI performance report, and GA4 can isolate visits from AI assistants.
THE SHORT VERSION
Make your site easy for AI to access, make your business easy to understand, publish the clearest answers in your field and in your part of New York, and earn mentions from sources AI already trusts. Then track it monthly.
02 · SEARCH HAS CHANGED
New Yorkers now ask, and AI answers
Buyers no longer scan ten blue links before choosing a dentist in Park Slope or a law firm in Midtown. Increasingly, an AI system reads those links for them and returns one answer, often naming two or three businesses.
What this means for a New York business
When an AI summary appears, fewer people click through to websites, and Pew found only about 1% of visits clicked a link inside the summary itself. The businesses that still win are the ones the answer names or cites. That makes two things matter at the same time: ranking well enough to be read by the AI system, and being clear, credible and specific enough to be chosen for the answer.
It is not only Google. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Claude and Gemini all search the web for current, local and commercial questions, and each now sends referral visits to the sources it cites. Questions with buying intent, such as “best accountant in Midtown Manhattan for a small business” or “which Long Island roofer has the best reviews”, are exactly the ones these tools answer with named recommendations.
THE NEW YORK OPPORTUNITY
New York is one of the most competitive search markets in the country, but most small and mid-sized businesses here have not adapted to AI search yet. Early, consistent work on the six pillars in this guide can put a neighborhood business inside answers that larger competitors are not yet optimizing for, especially for specific borough, neighborhood, industry and comparison questions.
03 · DEFINITIONS
What Answer Engine Optimization actually is
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your business the source that AI assistants and AI search features understand, trust and cite when they answer questions in your field.
You will also see GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), LLM SEO and AI SEO. They describe the same goal from slightly different angles. In practice they share one foundation with traditional SEO: crawlable pages, helpful content, a trustworthy reputation, and clear information about who you are.
| Traditional SEO | Answer Engine Optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in a list of results | Be named or cited inside the answer |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results pages | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Claude, voice assistants |
| Unit of success | A ranking position and a click | A mention, a citation link, an accurate description of your business |
| What content wins | Pages that match search intent | Passages that answer a specific question clearly and can be lifted on their own |
| Key trust signals | Links, relevance, page experience | All of SEO’s signals plus brand mentions, consistent business facts and corroboration across sources |
| How you measure | Rankings, clicks, conversions | AI feature impressions, AI referral visits, share of answers in tracked prompts, leads |
STRAIGHT FROM GOOGLE
Google’s guidance for its AI features says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet; there are no additional requirements, and no special files or AI-specific markup are needed. Its recommendations are the SEO fundamentals: allow crawling, use internal links, offer a good page experience, keep important content in text, and keep structured data, Merchant Center and Business Profile information accurate.
In other words, AEO does not replace SEO. It raises the bar on clarity, consistency and reputation, because an AI system is choosing one answer instead of listing ten options.
04 · HOW IT WORKS
How answer engines choose who to cite
Each platform works differently, but most AI search experiences follow the same broad pattern when a question needs current information.
- InterpretThe system works out what is being asked and often breaks it into several smaller searches.
- RetrieveIt searches an index: Google’s for AI Overviews and AI Mode, Bing’s foundation for Copilot, and each assistant’s own crawler or search partners.
- SelectIt keeps passages that are relevant, specific, trustworthy and easy to extract, and checks them against other sources.
- AnswerIt writes a synthesized answer and, on most platforms, links to the sources it relied on.
What makes a source more likely to be chosen
| Signal | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Accessible | The right crawlers are allowed, the page loads fast, and the main content is in the HTML. Most AI crawlers other than Google’s and Apple’s do not run JavaScript. |
| Relevant and specific | The page answers the exact question, including neighborhood, borough, price range, audience or use case, rather than talking about the topic in general. |
| Extractable | A clear heading, a direct answer in the first sentences, and supporting lists or tables that make sense when quoted on their own. |
| Corroborated | Other trusted sources say the same thing about you: reviews, directories, local news, industry sites, forums and videos. |
| Consistent | Your business name, address, phone, services and descriptions match across the web, so the system is confident it has the right entity. |
| Current | Visible “last updated” dates, current prices and recent examples for topics where freshness matters. |
WHERE AI ASSISTANTS LOOK
An Ahrefs analysis of tens of millions of AI answers from June 2025 found Wikipedia was the most-cited domain across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, with YouTube prominent in Perplexity and AI Overviews, and Reddit and Quora ranking highly in AI Overviews. Your own website matters, but so does what the rest of the web says about you.
05 · PILLAR 1
Technical access for AI crawlers
Before any content work, confirm that search and AI systems can reach, render and read your site. This is the most common reason a good business is invisible in AI answers.
Know which bots do what
AI companies separate crawlers that power search answers from crawlers that collect training data. You can allow one and block the other.
| User agent | Company | Purpose | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Googlebot | Crawls for Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode | Allow | |
| Google-Extended | Controls use of your content for Gemini training and grounding in Google’s other AI products; does not affect Search | Business choice | |
| Bingbot | Microsoft | Bing index, which Microsoft says is the same foundation Copilot relies on | Allow |
| OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI | Surfaces sites in ChatGPT search answers | Allow |
| ChatGPT-User | OpenAI | Visits pages when a user’s request needs them | Allow |
| GPTBot | OpenAI | Collects content that may train OpenAI models; independent of search | Business choice |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity | Indexes and links sites in Perplexity answers; not used for model training | Allow |
| Perplexity-User | Perplexity | Fetches pages a user’s question requires | Allow |
| Claude-SearchBot | Anthropic | Indexes content to improve Claude’s search answers | Allow |
| Claude-User | Anthropic | Retrieves pages when a Claude user asks a question | Allow |
| ClaudeBot | Anthropic | Collects content that may train Anthropic’s models | Business choice |
User-initiated fetchers such as ChatGPT-User and Perplexity-User may not follow robots.txt, because a person requested the page. Blocking a training crawler does not remove you from that company’s search answers.
A starting robots.txt for most businesses
This example allows search and answer crawlers everywhere except private areas. Decide separately whether to allow training crawlers; the example allows them, which can help models learn accurate facts about your brand.
User-agent: * Disallow: /wp-admin/ Allow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php # Search and answer crawlers (explicitly allowed) User-agent: Googlebot User-agent: Bingbot User-agent: OAI-SearchBot User-agent: PerplexityBot User-agent: Claude-SearchBot Allow: / # Optional: to opt out of model training, change Allow to Disallow User-agent: GPTBot User-agent: ClaudeBot User-agent: Google-Extended Allow: / Sitemap: https://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml
Five technical checks for your developer
- Firewall and CDN rules. Some hosting, CDN and security tools block AI crawlers by default. Check bot-management settings, not just robots.txt, and review server logs to confirm the bots above receive normal 200 responses.
- Content in the HTML. Vercel’s crawler research found that the major AI crawlers fetch JavaScript files but do not execute them. Server-render your main text, prices, FAQs, navigation and contact details.
- Core Web Vitals in the green. Aim for Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1 on mobile. Fast, stable pages are easier to crawl and convert better.
- Index in Google and Bing. Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your XML sitemap to both, and fix indexing errors. Bing supports IndexNow, which notifies participating engines when pages change.
- Clean structure. One topic per URL, descriptive headings in order (H1, then H2, then H3), internal links between related pages, and no important content hidden in images, PDFs only, or tabs that load on click.
NEW IN 2026: GOOGLE’S AI FEATURES SETTING
Search Console now includes a setting for whether your site appears in, and helps ground, Google’s generative AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. Opting out removes you from those features entirely and is not a ranking signal for regular results. For most businesses pursuing AEO, leave it on.
06 · PILLAR 2
Entity and brand consistency
AI systems need to be confident that every mention they find refers to the same business. Inconsistent names, addresses, phone numbers or service descriptions weaken that confidence, and with it your chance of being recommended.
Build one consistent profile of your business
- Write a single “source of truth.” Exact business name, address (including suite or floor, which matters in New York buildings), phone, website, hours, service list, service areas by borough and neighborhood, founding year and a 50-word description. Use it everywhere.
- Claim and complete the core listings: Google Business Profile, Bing Places for Business, Apple Business Connect and Yelp. Google’s AI guidance specifically asks businesses to keep Business Profile information up to date.
- Clean up directories. Fix outdated listings on industry directories, the Better Business Bureau, chambers of commerce, review sites and data aggregators. Old phone numbers and former addresses are a common, silent problem, especially after a move between boroughs.
- Align social profiles. LinkedIn company page, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and X should use the same name, description and website link.
- Strengthen your About page. Who you are, which parts of New York you serve, who leads the company, licenses, credentials, awards, memberships and notable clients. Link out to your official profiles.
- Name your people. Author bios with real credentials on articles, and leadership profiles, help AI systems connect your expertise to your brand.
QUICK TEST
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot: “What is [your business] and what do they offer in [your neighborhood]?” Note any wrong address, outdated service, missing service or confusion with a similarly named company. In a city this size, name collisions are common. Each error points to a source you need to fix.
FOR MULTI-LOCATION BRANDS
Give every location its own page with unique content, its own address and phone details, local reviews and staff, plus a matching Business Profile. Avoid near-duplicate neighborhood pages that only swap the place name.
07 · PILLAR 3
Answer-ready content
AI systems quote passages, not pages. The easier a passage is to lift and understand on its own, the more likely it is to be used.
The answer block formula
- Heading as the question, phrased the way customers ask it: “How much does a dental implant cost in Brooklyn?”
- Direct answer first, in 40 to 60 words, including the key fact, number or recommendation.
- Supporting detail: what affects the answer, exceptions, a short example.
- Structure: a short list, steps or a comparison table where it helps.
- Proof: a source, a statistic, your own data or a client example.
BEFORE
“At our practice, we believe every smile is unique, and our dedicated team takes pride in offering a wide range of solutions tailored to your individual needs…”
AFTER
“A single dental implant in Brooklyn typically costs $4,000 to $6,500, including the implant, abutment and crown. Price depends on bone grafting needs, the crown material and the number of visits. Most patients complete treatment in three to six months.”
Illustrative example; use your own verified pricing.
Content types that earn citations
- Pricing and cost guides with real ranges and what changes them in New York.
- Comparisons (“X vs Y”, “best options for…”) that are balanced and specific.
- How-to and process pages that walk through steps, timelines, permits and requirements.
- FAQ hubs built from the real questions your sales team and customers ask.
- Service and neighborhood pages with unique local detail, not templates.
- Original data: surveys, benchmarks, before-and-after results. Unique information is the hardest thing for AI to find elsewhere.
EXPERIENCE AND TRUST
Show who wrote the content and why they are qualified, add the date it was last reviewed, cite sources for claims, and include first-hand experience: photos of real work, case details and named examples. Google’s 2026 guidance for its AI features emphasizes unique content and clear organization.
08 · PILLAR 4
Structured data that matches the page
Structured data (schema markup) labels the facts on your page in a machine-readable format. It does not guarantee an AI citation, and Google says no special AI markup is required, but accurate markup removes ambiguity about who you are and what you offer.
The schema types most businesses need
| Type | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Organization | Your name, logo, contact details and official profiles (sameAs links). Every business, on the homepage or About page. |
| LocalBusiness and subtypes | Address, hours, geo-coordinates and service area for businesses customers visit or that serve part of New York. |
| Service | Each core service, its area served and provider. |
| Product with Offer | E-commerce: price, availability, shipping and reviews. Keep Merchant Center feeds in sync. |
| Article, BreadcrumbList | Blog posts and guides (author, publish and update dates) and your site hierarchy. |
| FAQPage | Optional. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026, but visible Q&A content remains valuable for AEO. |
Example: LocalBusiness markup for a New York business
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "LocalBusiness",
"name": "Your Company Inc.",
"url": "https://www.yourdomain.com",
"telephone": "+1-212-555-0100",
"address": { "@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "123 Example St, Suite 400",
"addressLocality": "New York", "addressRegion": "NY",
"postalCode": "10001", "addressCountry": "US" },
"areaServed": ["Manhattan", "Brooklyn", "Queens"],
"sameAs": [ "https://www.linkedin.com/company/your-company" ]
}
</script>THE ONE RULE THAT MATTERS
Google’s guidance is explicit that structured data should match the visible text on the page. Never mark up reviews, prices or facts that visitors cannot see. Validate with Google’s Rich Results Test or the Schema.org validator after every change.
09 · PILLAR 5
Third-party proof and mentions
AI systems cross-check. When independent sources describe your business consistently and positively, you become a safer recommendation.
What the data shows
Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands to see which factors correlated with being mentioned in Google’s AI Overviews (May 2025). Off-site brand signals came out on top. Correlation is not causation, but the pattern is clear.
| Factor | Correlation with AI Overview mentions |
|---|---|
| Branded web mentions | 0.664 |
| Branded anchors (links using your brand name) | 0.527 |
| Branded search volume | 0.392 |
| Domain Rating | 0.326 |
| Referring domains | 0.295 |
| Backlinks | 0.218 |
Where New York businesses can earn mentions
- Reviews: a steady flow of detailed Google reviews, plus Yelp and the review sites that matter in your industry. Respond to every review.
- Local and trade media: borough and neighborhood outlets, local newsletters, trade publications, podcasts and association newsletters. Offer expert commentary and original data about your corner of New York.
- Chambers and associations: borough chambers of commerce, business improvement districts (BIDs), Long Island and Westchester business groups, and industry associations often list members with a link.
- “Best of” lists and comparisons: make sure you are accurately included on reputable roundups in your category and borough.
- Communities: genuine, helpful participation on Reddit (including city and neighborhood communities), Quora and industry forums under your real identity. Never astroturf.
- Video: YouTube explainers and how-tos, with full transcripts and descriptions.
- Partners: supplier, manufacturer, client and association pages that list and link to you.
SMALL BUSINESS TIP
You do not need national press. Ten genuine local mentions, strong reviews and a complete Business Profile often matter more for “near me” and neighborhood-specific AI answers than one large article.
10 · PILLAR 6
Measuring AI visibility
You cannot improve what you do not track. AI visibility is now measurable from several angles; use them together.
1. Google Search Console
Traffic from Google’s AI features counts in the Performance report under the “Web” search type. Since August 2026, Search Console also shows impressions from generative AI features, which of your pages appear in AI responses, and in which countries.
2. Bing Webmaster Tools
Microsoft’s AI Performance report (public preview since February 2026) shows how often your content is cited in Copilot, Bing’s AI summaries and select partner experiences. Microsoft notes that a citation is not a click and the data is sampled.
3. GA4: isolate AI assistant visits
Create a custom channel group (Admin › Data display › Channel groups), add an “AI assistants” channel above Referral, and match the session source with this pattern:
^(chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|www\.perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.ai)$
Some AI apps, especially on mobile, send no referrer, so part of this traffic will appear as direct. Treat GA4 as a minimum, not the full picture.
4. A monthly prompt tracker
List 20 to 50 questions your buyers really ask, by service and by borough or neighborhood. Each month, run them in ChatGPT, AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity and record five things: whether you are mentioned (and where in the answer), whether your site is cited (and which page), any wrong facts about your business, which competitors are named, and which third-party sources are cited, so you know where to earn mentions.
THE METRICS THAT MATTER TO THE BUSINESS
Share of answers for your priority prompts, AI-referred visits, and, most importantly, leads, calls and sales from those visits. Mark “How did you hear about us?” responses that mention ChatGPT or AI search in your CRM.
11 · NEW YORK PLAYBOOK
Winning AI answers in New York specifically
New York is not one market. A query for “best pediatric dentist” plays out very differently in the Upper East Side, Flushing and Huntington. These are the local habits that make the biggest difference here.
- Think neighborhood, not just city. New Yorkers search, and ask AI, at the neighborhood level: “in Williamsburg”, “near Grand Central”, “on the Upper West Side”. Build pages for the neighborhoods you genuinely serve, with real local detail: landmarks you are near, transit lines, parking, local projects and clients.
- Get the address details exactly right. Suite and floor numbers, cross streets and entrance details are often what separate you from a business in the same building. Keep them identical on your site, Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places and Yelp.
- Decide storefront or service area. If customers visit you, use your real address. If you travel to them, set up a service-area Business Profile listing the boroughs and counties you cover, and match those areas on your website.
- Treat Yelp seriously. Yelp is widely used in New York and its reviews surface in other apps and in AI answers. Keep your listing complete and respond to reviews there as well as on Google.
- Serve the languages your customers speak. In many parts of Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx, customers search in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Bengali and other languages. If you serve those communities, publish real pages in those languages; AI systems will answer in them.
- Go beyond the five boroughs deliberately. Long Island, Westchester and upstate buyers ask about their own town by name. Create pages for Nassau and Suffolk towns, Westchester communities or upstate cities only where you genuinely work there.
- Mind the rules in regulated industries. Law firms, medical practices and financial services in New York have advertising and disclosure rules. Answer-ready content still needs to be accurate and compliant; have the right professional review it.
| If you are… | Priority prompts to track |
|---|---|
| A Manhattan professional firm | “best [service] in Midtown”, “[service] near Grand Central”, “top-rated [service] for startups in NYC” |
| A Brooklyn or Queens local business | “[service] in Park Slope”, “best [service] Astoria”, “[service] open late in Williamsburg” |
| A Long Island or Westchester company | “[service] in Huntington NY”, “best [service] Nassau County”, “[service] White Plains reviews” |
| A multi-location or statewide brand | “[brand] vs [competitor] New York”, “best [category] in New York State”, “[category] Albany or Buffalo” |
12 · PLAYBOOKS
What to prioritize by business size
Small businesses · 1 to 50 employees, mostly local
- Complete and actively maintain Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and Yelp.
- Build one strong page per core service, and per neighborhood or town you genuinely serve, each with unique details.
- Answer the 20 questions customers ask most, with prices or ranges wherever you can.
- Make reviews a weekly habit and reply to every one.
- Earn local mentions: borough chamber of commerce, BID, local media, community sponsorships, supplier pages.
Medium businesses · multi-location, e-commerce or B2B
- Create location pages with local staff, reviews and details, matched to each Business Profile.
- For e-commerce, complete Product and Offer markup and keep Merchant Center feeds accurate.
- Publish comparison, “best for” and buying-guide content around your categories.
- Run a quarterly digital PR push built on original data or customer research.
- Track AI referrals and prompt visibility per product line or region.
Large businesses · enterprise and national brands
- Assign an owner for brand facts across all properties, listings and knowledge sources.
- Audit server logs for AI crawler access, blocked paths and rendering failures at scale.
- Build expert-led content programs with named subject-matter experts and review dates.
- Monitor accuracy of AI answers about products, pricing and policies; correct sources fast.
- Report share of answers by market, product and competitor alongside SEO dashboards.
13 · THE 30-DAY PLAN
The 30-day AEO checklist
Work through one week at a time. Most items take under an hour; the full plan fits around a normal working month.
Week 1 · Access and baseline DAYS 1–7
- Run your 20 to 50 buyer questions in ChatGPT, AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity; record results.
- Review robots.txt and firewall or CDN bot settings; allow the search and answer crawlers.
- Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools; submit sitemaps to both.
- Check key pages load their main text without JavaScript (view source or a text-only fetch).
- Test Core Web Vitals on mobile with PageSpeed Insights; list pages outside the green.
- Set up the GA4 “AI assistants” channel group.
Week 2 · Entity and trust DAYS 8–14
- Write your business “source of truth” and share it with everyone who updates listings.
- Update Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and Yelp to match it exactly.
- Fix the five most visible directory listings with outdated details.
- Rewrite your About page with leadership, credentials, service areas and official profile links.
- Add or correct Organization and LocalBusiness markup; validate it.
- Start a weekly review-request routine.
Week 3 · Answer-ready content DAYS 15–21
- Pick your five most valuable service or product pages.
- Add a question-led section to each, with a 40 to 60 word direct answer at the top.
- Add prices or ranges, timelines and “who this is for” details where possible.
- Build or refresh an FAQ hub from real sales and support questions.
- Add author names, credentials and “last reviewed” dates to guides and articles.
- Link related pages to each other with descriptive anchor text.
Week 4 · Authority and measurement DAYS 22–30
- Identify the third-party sites cited for your buyer questions; plan how to earn a mention on three.
- Pitch one expert comment or data point to a local or trade publication.
- Answer two genuine questions in an industry or neighborhood community under your real name.
- Publish one comparison or cost guide that your competitors do not have.
- Re-run your prompt tracker and compare with week 1.
- Set a monthly review date for AI visibility, AI referrals and leads.
AFTER DAY 30
Repeat the content and authority weeks every month, expanding to new questions, services and neighborhoods. AEO compounds; most businesses see meaningful movement within three to six months of steady work.
Results vary by industry, competition and starting point. No one can guarantee AI citations or rankings.
14 · MYTHS
AEO myths, and what is actually true
| Myth | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| “AEO replaces SEO.” | AEO is built on SEO. Google’s AI features draw on the same index and fundamentals as regular Search, and other assistants rely on search indexes too. |
| “You need an llms.txt file to show up in AI.” | Google states that llms.txt is not needed for AI Overviews, AI Mode or any of its generative AI Search features. It is harmless to have, but no substitute for the six pillars. |
| “Schema markup guarantees citations.” | No markup guarantees inclusion. Structured data helps systems understand facts that are already clearly on the page. |
| “Blocking all AI bots protects my business.” | Blocking search and answer crawlers removes you from those answers. You can block training crawlers while allowing search crawlers. |
| “Publishing lots of AI-written pages will win.” | Thin, repetitive content is easy for AI systems to skip, because it adds nothing new. Unique information, real experience and clear answers win. |
| “You can pay to be recommended.” | Organic AI answers are not for sale. Advertising may appear alongside them on some platforms, but citations are earned through the signals in this guide. |
| “Only big Manhattan brands get mentioned.” | Specific questions about a neighborhood, niche or use case often surface smaller businesses with clear answers and strong local reputations. |

FAQ
Quick answers
What is the difference between SEO and AEO?
SEO helps a page rank in a list of search results. AEO helps your business get named or cited inside the answer that Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity or Claude writes. AEO is built on SEO: the same crawlable pages, helpful content and reputation, with extra focus on clear answers, consistent business facts and third-party mentions.
Do I need an llms.txt file to appear in AI answers?
No. Google states that llms.txt is not needed for AI Overviews, AI Mode or any of its generative AI Search features. It is harmless to have, but it is no substitute for crawlable pages, consistent business facts, answer-ready content and third-party mentions.
How long does AEO take for a New York business?
Most businesses see meaningful movement within three to six months of steady work on the six pillars. Competitive Manhattan categories can take longer; specific neighborhood and niche questions often move sooner. No one can guarantee AI citations or rankings.
Which AI crawlers should I allow?
Allow the search and answer crawlers, including Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot. Training crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended are a business choice; blocking them does not remove you from those companies’ search answers.
